Sound Recording Studio Opens in Downtown St. Joseph

Downtown St. Joseph, Mo. is growing, and a new business sees opportunity in the arts and entertainment district. Spot-On Audio Recording opened June 1, 2018 on Suite 300 of the Light and Power Building, located at 520 Francis Street. Spot-On Audio Recording, owned and operated by sound engineer Mark Etling, provides musicians and other creative talent with the high-quality audio production and engineering services. In addition, the firm specializes in providing certification testing for courtroom stenographers, broadcast captioning providers and Communication Testing Access Real-Time Translation (CART).

The company’s growing list of clients includes local musicians Stephanie Gummelt and Brent Isom, as well as The National Verbatim Reporters Association and the Missouri and Arkansas Certificated Court Reporters Associations.

Light and Power Building’s consulting facility director, Stanley Harris, had this to say about his new tenant, “We view Mark’s firm as a real asset to both our current and prospective tenants.” Mr. Harris continued, “This location puts Spot-On right in the middle of the downtown milieu and provides both an economic and artistic contribution to the development of the city’s center.”

For this most recent academic year, Mr. Etling served as an instructor of recording arts at the University of Colorado Denver. Previously Mr. Etling taught digital audio and live sound at Missouri Western State Universityin St. Joseph for 12 years, during five of which he also served as Technical Operations Coordinator and General Manager for the Dr. Thompson E. Potter Fine Arts Theatre on the university campus.

Mr. Etling has traveled extensively throughout the Midwest and Colorado performing with numerous jazz, blues, R&B, funk and country bands. Mr. Etling’s experience in digital media production includes voice over artist, sound engineer, producer, jingle writer for commercials, editor and studio musician. Mr. Etling also freelances as an audio consultant and front-of-house engineer for a variety of live events and productions, and currently serves as the Performing Arts Association’s audio engineer for their upcoming season at the Missouri Theater in St. Joseph.

Mr. Etling completed his Master of Applied Arts in Digital Media in 2014 at Missouri Western State University, where he previously earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music with emphasis in commercial music and recording arts. Mr. Etling also holds an Associate of Applied Science in Music and Video Business from the Colorado Institute of Art in Denver.
